Small Business Help Available

Starting and operating a business can be challenging.  Make a plan and work the plan. Wherever you are in the planning process these resources can help:

  • Small Business Development Center - provides free confidential consultations to help prepare market studies, feasiility analysis, business plans and other business management needs.
  • SCORE - provides free consultations for a variety of business development needs, matching the entrepreneur's industry and management needs with retired business managers with the appropriate expertise.  The closest office is the Red Wing office and they can be reached at (651) 388-4719.
  • University of Wisconsin - Extension - has a wide range of research, case study, and staff expertise that can be tailored to specific business requirements.  Access to the system office can by through any county Extension office.

Financing

Visit these resources to see what help is available for you:

  • Business Improvement District Grants - available for businesses located in the heart of downtown River Falls.  This is a cost sharing program that may pay up to 50% of new signs and up to 35% of building facade renovations.
  • Renewable Energy Program - River Falls has received national recognition for its commitment to renewable energy sytems.  May provide rebates and other financing for energy efficiency improvements or other energy system projects.
  • Commercial Revolving Loan Fund - Programs are designed to financially assist with the creation, expansion and retention of local buisnesses in the City, and to assist small business owners with an additional source of obtaining credit.  This is designed to be used in conjunction with other financing and for businesses located in the River Falls's commercial district.  Programs available for both St. Croix and Pierce Counties.  Contact the City Administration at 75-425-0900 for more information.
  • Local Banks and Credit Unions - Visit our local financial institutions to see what options are available locally.

Local Business Requirements

The City of River Falls does not require a general business license as a condition of doing business in the City but does require that businesses comply with City ordinances governing signage, zoning, traffic and street entrances, building codes, public utilities, stormwater control and so on.  Some specific occupations or businesses have their own permitting processes including direct sellers, billiards and pools tables, Christmas Tree sales and home-based businesses.  It's best to check with the City directly when starting a new business.  For businesses outside the City limits, check with your local township office for more information.
